Lying in bed in the dark, you will point to the ceiling to turn on the light, you will wave your hand to increase the temperature, you will make a T with your hands to turn on the TV set. You and your loved ones will feel safer at home, in parking lots, in airports: nobody will be watching, but computers will detect distressed people and suspicious activities. Computers will teach you how to effectively use gestures to enhance speech, to communicate with people who do not speak your language, to speak with deaf people, and you will easily learn many other sign languages to comminicate under water, to referee sports, etc. All that thanks to gesture recognition!
\r\n

\r\n
Kinect (TM)
\r\n
This is a challenge on gesture and sign language recognition using a Kinect camera. Kinect is revolutionizing the field of gesture recognition by providing an affordable 3D camera, which records both an RGB image and a depth image (using an infrared sensor). The challenge focuses on hand gestures. Applications include man-machine communication, translating sign languages for the deaf, video surveillance, and computer gaming. Check out some examples.
\r\n

\r\n
One-shot-learning
\r\n
Every application needs a specialized gesture vocabulary. If we want gesture recognition to become part of everyday life, we need gesture recognition machines, which easily get tailored to new gesture vocabularies. This is why the focus of the challenge is on “one-shot-learning” of gestures, which means learning to recognize new categories of gestures from a single video clip of each gesture. The gestures will be drawn from a small vocabulary of gestures, generally related to a particular task, for instance, hand signals used by divers, finger codes to represent numerals, signals used by referees, or marchalling signals to guide vehicles or aircrafts.
\r\n

\r\n
Protocol sketch
\r\n
This competition consists of two main components: a development phase (December 7, 2011 to April 6, 2012) and a final evaluation phase (April 7, 2012 to April 10. 2012):
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
During the development phase of the competition, the participants build a learning system capable of learning from a single training example a gesture classification problem. To that end, they get development data consisting of several batches of gestures, each split into a training set (of one example for each gesture) and a test set of short sequences of one to 5 gestures. Each batch contains gestures from a different small vocabulary of 8 to 15 gestures, for instance diving signals, signs of American Sign Language representing small animals, Italian gestures, etc. The test data labels are provided for such development data so the participants can self-evaluate their systems. To evaluate their progress and compare themselves with others, they can use provided validation data, for which one training example is provided for each gesture token in each batch, but the test data labels are withheld. The prediction results on validation test data can be submitted on-line to get immediate feed-back. A real-time leaderboard shows participants their current standing based on their validation set predictions.
\r\n
During the final evaluation phase of the competition, the participants get to perform similar tasks as those of the validation data on new final evaluation data revealed at the end of the development phase. The participants have a few days to train their systems and upload their predictions. Prior to the end of the development phase, Kaggle will make available a software vault so the participants can upload executable code for their best learning system, which they will then use to train their models and make predictions on the final evaluation test data. This will allow the competition organizers to check their results and ensure the fairness of the competition. Note that participation is NOT conditiioned on submitting code or disclosing methods. See the rules for details. If any of the top ranking participants opted not to submit their learning system for verification, he/she will have to demonstrate the performance of his/her system in person on another verification set. Any statistically significant deviation between the performance on the final evaluation set and the verification set may result in disqualification.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n

\r\n
Sponsors
\r\n
This challenge is organized by CHALEARN and is sponsored in part by Microsoft (Kinect for Xbox 360). The decryption key will be revealed on April 7, 2012.
\r\n

\r\n
Nomenclature
\r\n
In the dataset the batches including validation data are identified as validxx, where xx is the batch number. The batches including final evaluation data (when they are released) will be identified as finalxx. Each batch includes 47 RGB videos (called Mnn.avi) and 47 corresponding Kinect depth image videos (called Knn.avi), both corresponding to the simulataneous recording of the same gestures. Class labels for the first N videos are provided for training in a file ending with the suffix \"_train.csv\". The class labels for the remaining unlabeled videos must be predicted.
\r\n

\r\n
Submission File format
\r\n
Prepare a single submission file with all the predictions in a comma separated text format. We describe the format for final entries:
\r\n
\r\n
Each line in the submission file represents the labels predicted for the sequence of gestures found in a pair of videos Mnn.avi, Knn.avi, in the order in which the gestures appear in the video. There is a maximum of 5 gestures in each sequence.
\r\n
The predictions are positive integers in the range 1 to N, where N is the size of a given lexicon, Nspaces.
\r\n
Each line starts with an identifier in the format setnamexx_nn, where setname is either valid or final, xx is the batch number, and nn is the number of the video pair Mnn.avi, Knn.avi.
\r\n
\r\n
Example:
\r\n
[training examples omitted]
\r\n
valid1_10, 11 2 3
\r\n
valid1_11, 6 12
\r\n
...
\r\n
valid2_9, 4
\r\n
...
\r\n
valid12_10, 5
\r\n
...
\r\n
final21_11, 7 9
\r\n
final21_4, 7 2 4 3 1
\r\n
....
\r\n
final40_47, 2 6
\r\n

\r\n
Please note:
\r\n
\r\n
During the development period the predictions on the final evaluation data may be omitted (lines staring with finalxx_nn).
\r\n
The lines corresponding to training examples (for which the labels are provided) should preferably be omitted and will not be used to compute the score. Prediction errors on training examples may generate warnings, for debug purpose only.
\r\n
Missing lines or lines having a valid identifier but meaningless labels (e.g. labels outside the range of valid labels) will be given the worst achievable score. Extra lines with invalid identifiers will be discarted.
\r\n
\r\n

\r\n
Learning machine submission (Any time during the development phase)
\r\n
To simplify the verification process, Kaggle is offering to the participants to voluntarily upload their learning machine during the period March 7, April 6, 2012. Upload your model as a zip archive together with your result file on the Kaggle website: at the bottom of the submission page, you will see Attach a model file and a button \"Choose file\".
\r\n
By submitting their software, the authors grant to the organizers a license to evaluate it for the purpose of verifying the challenge results only. This approach is often taken by the researchers working on activity recognition. An example is the bag of STIP features.
\r\n
Tracking the position of body parts. This approach is used in most games. One popular method was introduced by Microsoft with their skeleton tracker, which is part of their SDK.
\r\n
\r\n
There is an excellent book on the subject.
\r\n
Some approaches require separating the gesture sequences into isolated gestures first, which is relatively easy in this dataset because the users return their hands to a resting position between gestures. Once you have a vector representation of isolated gestures, to do the \"one-shot-learning\", the simplest method is the nearest neighbor method. But you may also look for the best match between temporal sequences directly without isolating gestures using dynamic time warping.
\r\n
\r\n

\r\n
Setup
\r\n
\r\n
What is CHALEARN?
CHALEARN is a non-for-profit organization dedicated to organizing challenges in machine learning. Visit our website.
\r\n
What is the challenge schedule?
This is a tentative schedule for round 1, see the full schedule in the official rules. We have 85 different vocabularies. Each task consists of recognizing shorts sequences of 1 to 5 gestures performed by the same user in the same recording conditions. For each task we recorded a data batch of 100 gestures, recording multiple times each gesture token. The users had to follow a script (a prescribed order in which to perform the gestures). Because there may be several gestures in a video, there are only 47 videos in each batch (actually 47 x 2, because we recorded video pairs of RGB and depth data). For the validation and final evaluation data, you get only one labeled video of each gesture token and you then have to predict the labels of all the other videos.
\r\n
What is one-shot-leanring?
Learning from a single example. For this challenge, for every task, you get only one video pair (RGB and depth data) for every gesture token.

Why should I care about one-shot-learning?
Supplying a lot of training examples is impractical in many applications where recording data and/or labeling data is tedious or expensive. Many consumer applications of gesture recognition will become possible only if we can train systems to recognize new gestures with very few examples, and, in the limit, just one. For example, imagine that you want to replace your TV remote controller and program it with your own gestures.

\r\n
Why not provide more than one training example?
Sure, we could have done that. We think that one-shot-learning captures more the imagination and may contribute better to advance the state of the art in gesture recognition.
\r\n
Is one-shot-learning more than template matching?
There is a lot to be explored to do one-shot-learning. You may want to use the development data to learn new representations. You may want to develop data generating models and/or distortion models using the development data to generate more examples from your small training dataset for each task. These are just a few suggestions.

Should I label by hand the unlabeled examples?
No. This is the job of your automatic system.
\r\n
Can I use the unlabeled examples for training my system if I do not label them by hand?
Yes. However, in development data, we recorded multiple batches with the same lexicon but with different users to provide enough development data. We do not want to confuse the participants into thinking that the task is a multi-user task. We gave the users who recorded the data a lot of autonomy to interpret how the gestures should be performed. Hence, two batches using the same lexicon can be very different.
2) It may be possible to exploit domain information obtained from the knowledge of the lexicon to improve the performances. The data are broken up into batches devel01, devel02, ... etc.
\r\n
Validation data: Data on which you can get immediate feed-back on the public learderboard. The data are broken up into batches valid01, valid02,... You get only one labeled example of each gesture in each batch, the rest of the labels should be predicted.
\r\n
Final evaluation data: Data the will be made available shortly before the end of the challenge to perform the final evaluation. It will be similar to the validation data, but the gesture vocabularies will be different.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n

\r\n
File format
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
Each batch develxx or validxxcontains:\r\n
\r\n
RGB videos called M_yy.avi, where yy runs from 1 to 47.
\r\n
The corresponding depth images are called K_yy.avi.
\r\n
Training label files develxx_train.csv or validxx_train.csv
\r\n
Test label files (for development data only) develxx_test.csv
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
The label files have the video number yy in the first column followed by a comma, followed by the list of labels. The gesture labels in each batch refer to gestures from different gesture vocabularies. Hence the gestures labeled 1 in devel01 and devel02 are different.
\r\n
The README files provide you with a table of normalization constants that were used to format the depth data. Using the K_yy.avi files, the original depth values can be restored (approximately) as follows: (1) Average the R,G, and B values to get a value v; (2) Perform v/255*(MaxDepth-MinDepth)+MinDepth.
\r\n
The validation data was manually checked. Although human classification performances are of the order of 0.02 (2% error), there are very few real errors in the data. The human errors are mostly due to inattention. After examination of the truth values of the labels, about 1/1000 examples were found to be real errors. However, we point out a few errors in training data for the validation set:\r\n
1) valid01_10: The example recorded is incorrect. The gesture played is an example of pattern 1 instead of an example of pattern 5. You may use instead valid01_37 as an example of class 5.
\r\n
2) valid11 contains classes that are impossible to visually distinguish: class 2 = class 4 and class 5 = class 10. We suggest that you always predict \"4\" for the examples of class \"2\" and you always predict \"10\" for the examples of class \"5\" because those are the most abundant classes.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n

\r\n
Sample code
\r\n
We provide MatlabTM code to browse though the data and process it to create a sample submission. This promotion will be simply referred to as the “contest” throughout the rest of these rules and may be abbreviated on our website, in our documentation, and other publications as One-Shot-Learning Gesture Challenge or ChaLearn Gesture Challenge.
\r\n
In these rules, “organizers”, “we,” “our,” and “us” refer to CHALEARN and Microsoft Corporation; \"participant”, “you,” and “yourself” refer to an eligible contest participant.
\r\n
SECTION 1 Contest description
\r\n
This is a skill-based contest and chance plays no part in the determination of the winner(s). The goal of the contest is to develop a system capable of recognizing hand gestures, signs, or signals, from video data and 3D sensor data, recorded with a Microsoft Kinect sensor. Occasionally gestures may include head movements or facial expressions. The tasks of the challenge will be “single user”, “small vocabulary” recognition of short continuous sequences of gestures.
\r\n
(a) Focus of the Contest: The focus of the challenge is on “one-shot-learning” of gestures, which means learning to recognize gestures from a single example of each gesture category, drawn from a relatively small gesture vocabulary. A gesture vocabulary is a set of unique gestures, generally related to a particular task, for instance, hand signals used by divers, finger codes to represent numbers, signals used by referees, or marshaling signals to guide vehicles or aircrafts.
\r\n
(b) The contest will include a quantitative evaluation conducted with test data pre-recorded with a Kinect sensor and a live qualitative evaluation. There will be prizes both for the quantitative and the qualitative evaluation. For the live qualitative evaluation, the participants will present a demonstration of their gesture recognition system using a Kinect sensor, in the context of an application.
\r\n
(c) All eligible entries received will be judged using the criteria described below to determine winners.
\r\n
SECTION 2 Tentative Contest Schedule
\r\n
The registered participants will be notified by email of any change in the schedule.
\r\n
June 20, 2011 CVPR 2011 Gesture Recognition Workshop: Launching of the Challenge.
\r\n
November 7, 2011 Demonstrations at HCI 2011 held in conjunction with ICCV 2011.
\r\n
Release of sample data collected with Kinect by the organizers.
\r\n
December 7, 2011 Challenge platform opens (tentative date).
\r\n
January 7, 2012 Release of additional development Kinect data.
\r\n
March 7, 2012 Final evaluation data for round 1 (CVPR 2012) released (encrypted).
\r\n
April 7, 2012 Round 1 final evaluation data decryption key released.
\r\n
April 7+N, 2012 Round 1 final evaluation result deadline. If you are not qualified to submit a contest entry and still choose to submit one, under no circumstances will such entries qualify for Microsoft sponsored prizes.
\r\n
SECTION 4 Entry
\r\n
To be eligible for judging, an entry must meet the following content/technical requirements:
\r\n
(a) There will be no requirement to submit code or disclose algorithms to enter the competition. However, to be part of the final ranking the participants will be asked to fill out a survey (fact sheet) briefly describing their methods. In addition, to enter the qualitative evaluation, the participants will be asked to certify that they use a Kinect sensor and the Microsoft Software Development Kit (SDK). To qualify for prizes, the top ranking participants of the quantitative evaluation will be asked to submit themselves to post-challenge verifications, as detailed in Section 7.
\r\n
(b) For each conference, the participants will be free to enter either or both evaluations (quantitative and qualitative), which will take place in sequence (quantitative first):
\r\n

\r\n
To enter the quantitative evaluation, the participants will have to register and accept the challenge rules. The evaluation data (consisting of gestures recorded by the organizers with a Microsoft Kinect sensor) will be made available for purchase to the registered participants on data media, delivered by a mail carrier, at the participants’ cost, and will also be made available for download over the Internet at no cost to the participants.
\r\n
To enter the qualitative evaluation, the participants will also have to register and accept the challenge rules. In addition, they will have to register for the conference where the event will take place. To partially cover registration and travel costs, a limited number of travel awards will be granted (see the Prizes section). If the number of participants exceeds the capacity of the event, priority will be given to the top ranking entrants of the quantitative evaluation. The participants will be responsible for bringing their own hardware and software to the conference. They will need to use a Microsoft Kinect sensor (to the exclusion of any other sensor) and the Microsoft officially released Software Development Kit (to the exclusion of any other driver software).
\r\n

\r\n
(c) Data
\r\n

\r\n
Final evaluation data: The organizers will collect data with a Kinect sensor and the Microsoft SDK, for use in the quantitative evaluation. The evaluation data will consist of at least 3,000 recorded gestures, a fraction of which will be distributed for the CVPR 2012 competition round and a fraction of which will be distributed for the ICPR 2012 competition round. The recorded gestures will be subdivided into batches containing each 100 gesture tokens performed by the same person. Each batch will include data from a different gesture vocabulary of 8 to 15 unique gestures, unknown in advance to the competitors. Different batches may be performed by different persons. Each batch will be organized in short sequences of 1 to 5 gestures.
\r\n
Development and validation data: The participants are free to use any data they want to develop their system. The organizers will facilitate a data exchange during the challenge development period and are listing data resources that may be of interest on our database page. In addition, the contest organizers will collect data with a Kinect sensor, which will be made available to the participants. The development data and validation data sets will comprise over 15,000 gestures. The validation data will be used by the participants to validate their systems and practice submitting results. Upon release of the labels, the validation data will be available for further system development.
\r\n
Post-challenge verification data: The organizers will also collect additional post-challenge verification data, again with a Kinect sensor, which will not be released to the participants, and may be used in post-challenge verifications to test the code of the winners. The verification data will be identical in nature and in amount to the final evaluation data.
\r\n
Submission: The results will be submitted on-line via a web platform. During the development period, the participants will receive immediate feed-back on validation data released for practice purpose. For the final evaluation, the participants will receive a key to unlock the final evaluation data. From the time of release of the key, they will have N days to turn in prediction results on the web platform (N between 3 and 10 as determined by the beta tests). The performances of the final evaluation data will not be released until the challenge is over.
\r\n

\r\n
(d) In addition, by submitting your entry into this contest you confirm that, to the best of your knowledge:
\r\n

\r\n
Your entry is your own original work; and
\r\n
Your entry only includes material that you own, or that you have permission from the copyright / trademark owner to use.
\r\n

\r\n
SECTION 5 Potential use of entry
\r\n
Other than what is set forth below, we are not claiming any ownership rights to your entry. The submission of entries is via the web interface available at: http://www.kaggle.com/c/gesturechallenge. Follow the instructions on the website to submit entries.
\r\n
(b) The participants will be registered as mutually exclusive teams, following the rules of Kaggle.com. Each team can make a maximum of five( 5) entries per day on validation data during the development period. Each team may submit only one single final entry on final evaluation data in each round (one each for the CVPR 2012 conference and for the ICPR 2012 conference). If several final entries are made by the same team, the last one received before the deadline will be counted as the final entry for purposes of the contest. We are not responsible for entries that we do not receive for any reason, or for entries that we receive but are not decipherable for any reason.
\r\n
(c) We will automatically disqualify:
\r\n

\r\n
Incomplete or invalid entries; and
\r\n
Entries that we receive in excess of the entry limit described above.
\r\n

\r\n
SECTION 7 Judging the entries
\r\n
The board of CHALEARN will select a panel of judges to judge the entries; all judges will be forbidden to enter the contest and will be are experts in computer vision, pattern recognition or machine learning (more particularly in gesture recognition, or experts in challenge organization). A list of the judges will be made available upon request and will include at least one independent judge not employed by or otherwise affiliated with CHALEARN or Microsoft. The judges will review all eligible entries received and select three (3) winners in each quantitative and qualitative evaluations and in each round (a total of 12 winners) based upon the following criteria:
\r\n
(a) Quantitative evaluation:
\r\n

\r\n
The quantitative evaluation will be performed with pre-recorded data called “final evaluation data”. The final evaluation data (described in details in the Data section) will consist of short sequences of recorded gestures organized in batches containing gestures performed by the same person, using the same gesture vocabulary. For each batch, the participants will be given one labeled training example of each unique gesture (one-shot-learning). The labels of the remaining gestures (called test examples) will be kept secret to the participants and will be known only to the organizers. The participants will have to turn in the predictions of the labels of the test examples (such predictions are called Results).
\r\n
Additional data will also be provided for practice purposes to the participants before the final evaluation (so-called “development data” and “validation data”) and additional “verification data” will be reserved by the organizers to perform eventual post-challenge verifications, see the Data section.
\r\n
To give every participant the same amount of time to run the tests, the final evaluation data will be delivered encrypted to the participants in advance. The decryption key will be released a given number N of days prior to the Result submission deadline. The Results will have to be submitted on-line on the website of the challenge. The number N will be determined by the beta tests and may be between 3 to 10 days.
\r\n
The ranking of the participants will be based on a performance score. This score will reflect the total number of errors of gesture recognition on test data (smaller numbers of errors are best). For instance, the score will be proportional to the count of the minimal number of edit operations (deletions, insertions and substitutions) needed to recover the true labels. The errors will be added over all the gesture sequences of the test examples of the final evaluation data. This may include either sending to the organizers executable code (which may be encrypted to the extent allowed by US law) running on a standard platform, or sending a full system (including hardware and software) if special purpose hardware is used, or bringing a full system to the site of the qualitative live evaluation (CVPR 2012 for the first round and ICPR 2012 for the second round) to let the organizers perform a live test (if you do not wish to send either the code or a system for evaluation). The code and/or system submitted for verification will have to be standalone and in particular it will not be allowed to access the Internet. The verifications will be carried out using verification data similar to the final evaluation data. The code or system will be kept in confidence. "content": "
What you need to predict
\r\n
Each video contains the recording of 1 to 5 gestures from a vocabulary of 8 to 15 gesture tokens. For instance a gesture vocabulary may consist of the signs to referee volleyball games or the signs to represent small animals in the sign language for the deaf.
\r\n
You need to predict the identity of those gestures, represented by a numeric label (from 1 to 15). The data are divided into data batches, each having a different vocabulary of gestures. So the numeric labels represent different gestures in every batch.
\r\n
In the data used for evaluation (called validation data and final evaluation data), you get one video clip for each gesture token as a training example in every batch. You must predict the labels of the gestures played in the other unlabeled videos.
\r\n

\r\n
Levenshtein distance
\r\n
For each video, you provide an ordered list of labels R corresponding to the recognized gestures. We compare this list to the corresponding list of labels T in the prescribed list of gestures that the user had to play. These are the \"true\" gesture labels (provided that the users did not make mistakes). We compute the so-called Levenshtein distance L(R, T), that is the minimum number of edit operations (substitution, insertion, or deletion) that one has to perform to go from R to T (or vice versa). The Levenhstein distance is also known as \"edit distance\".
\r\n
For example:
\r\n
L([1 2 4], [3 2]) = 2
\r\n
L([1], [2]) = 1
\r\n
L([2 2 2], [2]) = 2
\r\n
We provide the Matab(R) code for the Levenshtein distance in our sample code.
\r\n

\r\n
Score
\r\n
The overall score we compute is the sum of the Levenshtein distances for all the lines of the result file compared to the corresponding lines in the truth value file, divided by the total number of gestures in the truth value file. This score is analogous to an error rate. However, it can exceed one.
\r\n
Public score means the score that appears on the leaderboard during the development period and is based on the validation data.
\r\n
Final score means the score that will be computed on the final evaluation data released at the end of the development period, which will not be revealed until the challenge is over. The final score will be used to rank the participants and determine the prizes.
\r\n

\r\n
Verification procedure
\r\n
To verify that the participants complied with the rule that there should be no manual labeling of the test data, the top ranking participants eligible to win prizes will be asked to cooperate with the organizers to reproduce their results.
\r\n
Preferred procedure
\r\n
At the end of the development period, from March 7 until April 6, 2012, the participants will be offered by Kaggle the possibility of uploading executable code for a standard platform to a software vault. The organizers will evaluate requests to support particular platforms, but do not commit to support all platforms. The burden of proof will rest on the participants, see our backup procedure. The code will be kept in confidence and used only for verification purpose after the challenge is over. The code submitted will need to be standalone and in particular it will not be allowed to access the Internet. It will need to be capable of training models from the final evaluation data training examples, for each data batch, and making label predictions on the test examples of that batch. Instructions on how to prepare the code will be given in February 2012.
\r\n
Backup procedure
\r\n
If for some reason a participant elects not to submit executable code before the April 6, 2012 deadline, he/she will have the option of bringing a full system to the site of the workshop at CVPR 2012, or another location mutually agreed upon, to let the organizers perform a live test. The organizers may also decide to run this backup procedure if, for a technical reason, the executable code provided by the participants cannot be run on their computers. The verification will be carried out using verification data similar to the final evaluation data.
