I just missed the deadline for new entrants by half an hour. That is really painful.

This is really absurd. In the timeline of this competition, no deadline was mentioned for "First Submission". How should a participant know that "Deadline for new entrants" should be interpreted as "Deadline for first submission"?

Same here... Since the competition was shown as "Active" on my profile and I had already accepted the "rules and stuff " I thought it was ok, but when I tried to submit ~40 mins ago, the system didn't allowed.

Additionally, as you can see in kdd cup 2014 timeline, it's written pretty clear: "July 8, 2014 - First Submission Deadline. Your team must make its first submission by this deadline". This opened space for misinterpretation here.

We almost never make exceptions to rules, but I think we will here. The language on the timeline is the old text (from before we made the change to the deadline being based on first submission). I agree that it was not sufficiently clear and you should not be punished for missing it.

Can you just do away with the "First Submission" deadline in the first place? I can understand cutting off team mergers at some point but what is the purpose of preventing people from submitting something? I had no idea this was the rule, and didn't see that there was an extension until about 5 minutes ago. This is incredibly annoying.

I thought by accepting the terms & downloading the data, you were entered into the competition.

Doesn't really make sense that you have to make a submission (in all likelihood with the supplied sample/random/test submission) to enter. What does that prove - that you can upload a file with random data?

As I precaution, I've now made submissions to all my competitions with random data.
