Maybe rc's point is to some extend the solution.
\n
\n
We have experimented with banning teams during the competition. All it does is inform the cheater that they were busted, gives time to make new accounts, and makes them more careful to hide their tracks.
\n
We'll do some thinking about your points on trust. I agree it requires a lot of faith (and it should, since it can have financial ramifications). The problem with warning about a potential cheater is firstly that the review process is manual, secondly that a warning would leak information and could be abused, and thirdly that we've seen cases where only one of the members was cheating, unbeknownst to the others (after the merger had occurred).
\n
The best way to handle now is to establish a clear, written agreement that sets expectations about proper behavior, division of labor, IP, sharing, & prizes.
",

",

There's also been some Masters and people with lots of competitions who have been in teams where someone has cheated - so it really is hard to discern "trustworthyness". I'd be mortified if I got removed from the leaderboard. But saying that, I've been in teams with 7 different people and have had no problems. So, I think it is a minority rather than majority
",
