Most did NOT die during a race. And you are not distinguishing between those euthanized due to injuries versus those whose hearts malfunction. The majority died during exercise or in their barns, not on the Track, and the vast majority cannot be causally linked to anything which went on during a race. During races they die for a limited number of reasons: they \"take a bad step\" which fractures a foreleg, like basketball players can land awkwardly while jumping and tear an achilles tendon, or twist an ankle. They can also be vulnerable to severe fractures because their forelegs have undetected stress fractures or other subclinical conditions which make their bones more likely to snap. It is suspected than a certain proportion die because of the effects of drugs which they have been given to either enhance performance or mask their lameness. Saying they \"died while racing\" is a needlessly inflammatory way to categorize them. Sometimes they just drop dead in the barn, and no real good cause is established.</p>",
