"1049719": "Hey everyone!\n\nThis is a different type of competition where I wasn't seeking how people specifically coded to solve a problem. I read through the questionnaire and found a lot of questions on Sustainability and cities. I have very limited domain knowledge in the area so I wanted to start a research paper thread and build on it, and hope others share as well, papers to gain domain knowledge. I'll be reading these over the coming days and commenting more as I go through all of them. Hope this helps!\n\nResearch Papers:\n\n* [Towards Smart Sustainable Cities: Addressing semantic heterogeneity in building management systems using discriminative models](https://arxiv.org/abs/2008.07414) - Building Management Systems (BMS) are crucial in the drive towards smart sustainable cities. This is due to the fact that they have been effective in significantly reducing the energy consumption of buildings. \n\n* [State of the Art Survey of Deep Learning and Machine Learning Models for Smart Cities and Urban Sustainability](https://arxiv.org/abs/2010.02670) - This paper presents the state of the art of DL and ML methods used in this realm. Through a novel taxonomy, the advances in model development and new application domains in urban sustainability and smart cities are presented. \n\n* [Smart Urban Mobility: When Mobility Systems Meet Smart Data](https://arxiv.org/abs/2005.06626) - This article provides a survey of different approaches and technologies such as intelligent transportation systems (ITS) that leverage communication technologies to help maintain road users safe while driving, as well as support autonomous mobility through the optimization of control systems.\n\n* [Online platforms of public participation -- a deliberative democracy or a delusion?](https://arxiv.org/abs/2009.14074) - Trust and confidence in democratic institutions is at an all-time low. At the same time, many of the complex issues faced by city administrators and politicians remain unresolved. To tackle these concerns, many argue that citizens should, through the use of digital platforms, have greater involvement in decision-making processes.\n\n* [Planning for sustainable Open Streets in pandemic cities](https://arxiv.org/abs/2009.12548) - n the wake of the pandemic, the inadequacy of urban sidewalks to comply with social distancing remains untackled in academy. Beyond isolated efforts (from sidewalk widenings to car-free Open Streets), there is a need for a large-scale and quantitative strategy for cities to handle the challenges that COVID-19 poses in the use of public space.\n\n* [IoT Applications in Urban Sustainability](https://arxiv.org/abs/2008.10656) - Internet of Things is one of the driving technologies behind the concept of Smart Cities and is capable of playing a significant role in facilitating urban sustainable development. This chapter explores the relationship between three core concepts namely Smart Cities, Internet of Things and Sustainability\n\n* [Standardized Green View Index and Quantification of Different Metrics of Urban Green Vegetation](https://arxiv.org/abs/2008.00229) - Urban greenery is considered an important factor in relation to sustainable development and people's quality of life in the city. Although ways to measure urban greenery have been proposed, the characteristics of each metric have not been fully established, rendering previous researches vulnerable to changes in greenery metrics.\n\n* [EAGP: An Energy-Aware Gossip Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks](https://arxiv.org/abs/2007.12906) - In Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), typically composed of nodes with resource constraints, leveraging efficient processes is crucial to enhance the network lifetime and, consequently, the sustainability in ultra-dense and heterogeneous environments, such as smart cities.\n\n* [Air Quality Control through Bike Sharing Fleets](https://arxiv.org/abs/2007.08305) - Air quality and the presence of tiny particular matter are crucial factors in human health, especially when considering urban scenarios.\n\n* [Urban Mobility Swarms: A Scalable Implementation](https://arxiv.org/abs/2007.06653) - We present a system to coordinate 'urban mobility swarms' in order to promote the use and safety of lightweight, sustainable transit, while enhancing the vibrancy and community fabric of cities.\n\n* [Gamification and engagement of tourists and residents in public transportation exploiting location-based technologies](https://arxiv.org/abs/2006.16077) - Gamification, which is the use of game elements in non-game contexts, has proven to deliver very positive results, by turning regular activities into engaging ones, which are fun to perform. We have designed a mobile application, that interacts with short-range wireless communication technologies, inviting people to use public transport. To evaluate the solution, we have created a questionnaire based on the System Usability Scale, but also using usability testing with specific tasks.\n\n* [Extracting the multimodal fingerprint of urban transportation networks](https://arxiv.org/abs/2006.03435) - Urban mobility increasingly relies on multimodality, combining the use of bicycle paths, streets, and rail networks. These different modes of transportation are well described by multiplex networks. Here we propose the overlap census method which extracts a multimodal profile from a city's multiplex transportation network. We apply this method to 15 cities, identify clusters of cities with similar profiles, and link this feature to the level of sustainable mobility of each cluster. \n\n* [Modern cities emerge as 'super-cells' where enclosed industrial systems are hotspots of goods and services](https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.01881) - Using a cluster analysis of 15 traits of cities and other living systems, we found that modern cities are more similar to eukaryotic cells than to multicellular organisms. Enclosed industrial systems, such as factories and greenhouses, dominate modern cities and are analogous to organelles as hotspots that provide high-flux goods and services.\n\n* [Smart City Governance in Developing Countries: A Systematic Literature Review](https://arxiv.org/abs/2001.10173) - This review examines the state of smart city development in developing countries, which includes understanding the conceptualisations, motivations, and unique drivers behind (and barriers to) smarty city development.\n\n* [More from Less? Environmental Rebound Effects of City Size](https://arxiv.org/abs/2001.09968) - We aim at understanding if Brand's law holds true after adopting a consumption-based approach to urban emissions. The proposed model shows that when considering consumption-based emissions, in most cases Brand's law falls apart - bigger cities have greater purchase power, resulting in greater consumption of goods and higher associated GHG emissions.\n\n* [Autonomous Shuttle-as-a-Service (ASaaS): Challenges, Opportunities, and Social Implications](https://arxiv.org/abs/2001.09763) - Modern cities are composed of complex socio-technical systems that exist to provide services effectively to their residents and visitors. In this context, smart mobility systems aim to support the efficient exploitation of the city transport facilities as well as sustainable mobility within the urban environment.\n\n* [PoAh: A Novel Consensus Algorithm for Fast Scalable Private Blockchain for Large-scale IoT Frameworks](https://arxiv.org/abs/2001.07297) - \n\n* [Predicting Urban Innovation from the Workforce Mobility Network in US](https://arxiv.org/abs/1911.00436) -",
