The ground truth includes the book IDs and the corresponding epoch labels:\n- Romanticism\n- Victorian\n- Modernism \n- PostModernism\n- OurDays\n\nThe classifier's input is a book in text format, and its output is a single value (epoch). \nThe training and validation sets are released at the beginning of the competition. The test set will be released (without labels) a week before the deadline. \nThe results will be evaluated and ranked based on average accuracy.\n\n## Files\n\n* **train.zip** - the training set files. \n* **train.csv** - the training set labels\n* **valid.zip** - the validation set files\n* **valid.csv** - the validation set labels\n* **test.zip** - the test set files (to be released on July 10, 2023)\n* **sample_submission.csv** - a sample submission file in the correct format\n\n**All the files are given in the form of 1000-word chunks.**\n\n## Columns\n\n* `BOOK_id` - id of a book\n* `Epoch` - is a label (one of 5 classes described above)",

      "content": "To advance the field of implicit temporal information retrieval from a text, this competition aims to challenge participants to develop automatic methods to identify the literary epochs of a given text, which is considered here as an implicit temporal context of a book. \n\nThe competition is held as a part of the 1st International Workshop on Implicit Author Characterization from Texts for Search and Retrieval [IACT’23](https://en.sce.ac.il/news/iact23), held on July 27, 2023, in conjunction with the 46th International ACM [SIGIR](https://sigir.org/sigir2023/) Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval.\n\n\nThe task on Automatic Classification of Literary Epochs (CoLiE) aims at automatic identification of the literary epoch of a given text from its writing style: (1) Romanticism (1798-1837), (2) Victorian Literature (1837-1901), (3) Modernism (1900-1945), (4) Postmodernism (1945-2000), and (5) our days (from 2000).\n\nWe believe this shared task will help to advance the field of information retrieval and natural language processing and will also contribute to a deeper understanding of literary history.\n\nThis competition is open to anyone with a passion for information retrieval, machine learning, and natural language processing. Whether you are a seasoned expert or a newcomer to the field, we welcome you to participate and extend the boundaries of automated text analysis!\n\n#### To join the competition click the \"Join Competition\" button at the top right corner. **In addition, please fill in the** [ registration form](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdWI0lH-mnJ2Cs8zi0UsyFcsZxjxSQ1fEnXSZnXFfI_MIDlxw/viewform?usp=sf_link).\n![](https://www.googleapis.com/download/storage/v1/b/kaggle-user-content/o/inbox%2F11045058%2Fbd80f888371e1323fdf06ec334f31f16%2FScreenshot%202023-06-02%20145927.png?generation=1685708321707432&alt=media)\n\n#-------------------------------------------------------------------------------\nImages were automatically generated with DALL·E\n\n",

      "name": "Literary Epochs",
      "content": "# Literary Epochs\n\nThere are different ways to classify epochs in literature, and the classification may vary depending on the cultural and historical context. However, one way to classify epochs in literature from 1700 to our days is as follows:\n\n1. Romanticism (1798-1837) [1]: Romanticism emphasized emotions, imagination, and the natural world.\n2. Victorian era (1837-1901) [2]: Named after Queen Victoria's reign, this era saw a focus on morality, social reform, and a growing interest in science and technology.\n3. Modernism (1900-1945) [3]: Literature during this period often emphasized fragmentation, ambiguity, and experimentation with form and language. \n4. Postmodernism (1945-2000) [4]: Postmodernism rejected the idea of objective truth and grand narratives, and instead emphasized irony, intertextuality, and self-reflexivity.\n5. Our days (from 2000) [5]: Contemporary literature is characterized by diverse voices, exploring global themes while embracing hybridity and genre-blurring. \n\n### References\n\n[1] 1993.
