"content": "## Smartwatch data\nAll smartwatch-related data (collected by the Cozie platform) are contained in the training and test data files, for which there are details below explaining each of the columns. The physiological and environmental data were collected at a higher frequency than micro-survey responses. Therefore, these datasets are sparse, i.e., many values are empty as not every row contains a microsurvey response. In the following code snippets, we show a few examples of how to filter the data to reduce the sparsity:\n\n#### Filter for Cozie data from one particular participant: \n```python\nfilter = (df['id_participant']=='xesh001')\ndf[filter].head()\n```\n#### Filter for micro-survey responses from one particular participant:\n```python\nfilter = (df['id_participant']=='xesh001') & (df['ws_survey_count'].notna())\ndf[filter].head()\n```\n#### Filter for heart rate data from one particular participant:\n```python\nfilter = (df['id_participant']=='xesh001') & (df['ts_heart_rate'].notna())\ndf[filter]['ts_heart_rate'].head()\n```\n### Micro-survey data\nThere are two larger categories of data provided by the Cozie app: micro-survey data and physiological/activity/environmental data.\n\nOnly rows with micro-survey responses have an integer value in `ws_survey_count`. Columns with responses to the micro-survey question have the prefix `q_`. Only rows with micro-survey responses have longitude and latitude information (`ws_latitude`,`ws_longitude`). `ws_timestamp_location` is the timestamp of when the location data was retrieved. Usually, the value in `ws_timestamp_location` and `index` are close together. There are instances where the location information is much older than the watch survey response, i.e., `ws_timestamp_location`<<`index`. In some instances, no location data was collected for the micro-survey. In these cases, the longitude and latitude are zero.\n\nFor privacy reasons, some of the longitude and latitude data was altered. In cases where the micro-survey response column `q_location` value is 'Indoor - Home', the coordinates (longitude, latitude) were converted to a [hexagonal coordinate system](https://h3geo.org/) with an edge length of approximately 200m. Then, the hexagonal coordinates were converted back into longitude and latitude, resulting in intentionally degraded accuracy. `ws_timestamp_start` is the timestamp of when the micro-survey was started. For micro-surveys, the timestamp in `index` is the time when the watch survey was submitted.\n\n| Field name | Type | Unit | Description |\n|-------------------------|-----------|------|-------------|\n| `id_participant` | string | - | Unique identifier for each participant |\n| `id_unique` | string | - | Unique identifier for row |\n| `index` | timestamp | time |Timestamp (UTC) also serves as index |\n| `q_activity_category_alone` | string | - | Response to micro-survey question 'Category of activity? The sampling intervals for these columns differ between columns and may change within a column.\n\n| Field name | Type | Unit | Description |\n|-------------------------|-----------|------|-------------|\n| `id_participant` | string | - | Unique identifier for each participant |\n| `id_unique` | string | - | Unique identifier for row |\n| `index` | timestamp | time |Timestamp (UTC) of when micro-survey was submitted, also serves as index |\n| `ts_audio_exposure_environment` | float | dB(A)| Noise level, provided by [Apple HealthKit](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/healthkit/hkquantitytypeidentifier/3081271-environmentalaudioexposure) |\n| `ts_heart_rate` | float | bpm | Heart rate, provided by [Apple HealthKit](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/healthkit/hkquantitytypeidentifier/1615138-heartrate)|\n| `ts_oxygen_saturation` | float | % | Blood oxygen saturation provided by [Apple HealthKit](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/healthkit/hkquantitytypeidentifier/1615377-oxygensaturation) |\n| `ts_resting_heart_rate` | float | bpm | Resting heart rate, provided by [Apple HealthKit](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/healthkit/hkquantitytypeidentifier/2867756-restingheartrate) |\n| `ts_stand_time` | float | min | Stand time, provided by [Apple HealthKit](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/healthkit/hkquantitytypeidentifier/3174858-applestandtime) |\n| `ts_step_count` | float | steps | Number of steps walked, provided by [Apple HealthKit](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/healthkit/hkquantitytypeidentifier/1615548-stepcount). This mobile and smartwatch application for iOS devices allows people to complete a watch-based micro-survey and provide real-time feedback about environmental conditions via their Apple Watch. It leverages the built-in sensors of the smartwatch to collect physiological (e.g., heart rate, activity), environmental (sound level), and location (latitude and longitude) data. The dataset from this deployment includes micro-survey responses from 98 people, who each provided at least 100 micro-survey responses from October 2022 to August 2023. The micro-survey question flow is seen in Figure 3. For each survey response location, digital-twin-created spatial indicators were calculated using the [Urbanity python package](https://github.com/winstonyym/urbanity). In addition, publicly available weather data is also provided.\n\nThe goal of the competition is to predict the values of the columns `q_noise_nearby`, `q_noise_kind`, `q_earphones`, `q_thermal_preference `as well as possible.\n\n## Micro-survey question flow\n![](https://www.googleapis.com/download/storage/v1/b/kaggle-user-content/o/inbox%2F8649844%2Fa2e63dc3ed89035e7e242230f94b9488%2Fwatch_survey_noise_and_privacy-36fcc4ca7094d37b0f0a79419cd93c4a.png?generation=1699286770839443&alt=media) Figure 3: Micro-survey question flow for this data set. COMPETITION DATA.\n\"Competition Data\" means the data or datasets available from the Competition Website for the purpose of use in the Competition, including any prototype or executable code provided on the Competition Website. The Competition Data will contain private and public test sets. Which data belongs to which set will not be made available to participants.\n\nA. Data Access and Use. You may access and use the Competition Data for any purpose, whether commercial or non-commercial, including for participating in the Competition and on Kaggle.com forums, and for academic research and education. The Competition Host reserves the right to disqualify any participant who uses the Competition Data other than as permitted by the Competition Website and these Rules.\n\nB. Data Security. You agree to use reasonable and suitable measures to prevent persons who have not formally agreed to these Rules from gaining access to the Competition Data. You agree not to transmit, duplicate, publish, redistribute or otherwise provide or make available the Competition Data to any party not participating in the Competition. You agree to notify Kaggle immediately upon learning of any possible unauthorized transmission of or unauthorized access to the Competition Data and agree to work with Kaggle to rectify any unauthorized transmission or access.\n\nC. External Data. You may use data other than the Competition Data (“External Data”) to develop and test your models and Submissions. However, you will (i) ensure the External Data is available to use by all participants of the competition for purposes of the competition at no cost to the other participants and (ii) post such access to the External Data for the participants to the official competition forum prior to the Entry Deadline.\n\n8. SUBMISSION CODE REQUIREMENTS.\nA. Private Code Sharing. Unless otherwise specifically permitted under the Competition Website or Competition Specific Rules above, during the Competition Period, you are not allowed to privately share source or executable code developed in connection with or based upon the Competition Data or other source or executable code relevant to the Competition (“Competition Code”). This prohibition includes sharing Competition Code between separate Teams, unless a Team merger occurs. Any such sharing of Competition Code is a breach of these Competition Rules and may result in disqualification.\n\nB. Public Code Sharing. You are permitted to publicly share Competition Code, provided that such public sharing does not violate the intellectual property rights of any third party. If you do choose to share Competition Code or other such code, you are required to share it on Kaggle.com on the discussion forum or kernels associated specifically with the Competition for the benefit of all competitors. By so sharing, you are deemed to have licensed the shared code under an Open-Source Initiative-approved license (see www.opensource.org) that in no event limits commercial use of such Competition Code or model containing or depending on such Competition Code.\n\nC. Use of Open Source. Unless otherwise stated in the Specific Competition Rules above, if open-source code is used in the model to generate the Submission, then you must only use open-source code licensed under an Open-Source Initiative-approved license (see www.opensource.org) that in no event limits commercial use of such code or model containing or depending on such code.\n\n9. DETERMINING WINNERS. \nEach Submission will be scored and ranked by the evaluation metric stated on the Competition Website. During the Competition Period, the current ranking will be visible on the Competition Website's public leaderboard. The potential winner(s) are determined solely by the leaderboard ranking on the private leaderboard, subject to compliance with these Rules. The public leaderboard will be based on the public test set and the private leaderboard will be based on the private test set.\n\nIn the event of a tie, the Submission that was entered first to the Competition will be the winner. In the event a potential winner is disqualified for any reason, the Submission that received the next highest score rank will be chosen as the potential winner.\n\n10. NOTIFICATION OF WINNERS & DISQUALIFICATION.\nThe potential winner(s) will be notified by email.\n\nIf a potential winner (i) does not respond to the notification attempt within one (1) week from the first notification attempt or (ii) notifies Kaggle within one week after the End Date that the potential winner does not want to be nominated as a winner or does not want to receive a Prize, then, in each case (i) and (ii) such potential winner will not receive any Prize, and an alternate potential winner will be selected from among all eligible entries received based on the Competition’s judging criteria.\n\nIn case (i) and (ii) above Kaggle may disqualify the participant. However, in case (ii) above, if requested by Kaggle, such potential winner may provide code and documentation to verify the participant’s compliance with these Rules. If the potential winner provides code and documentation to the satisfaction of Kaggle, the participant will not be disqualified pursuant to this paragraph.\n\nCompetition Host reserves the right to disqualify any participant from the Competition if the Competition Host reasonably believes that the participant has attempted to undermine the legitimate operation of the Competition by cheating, deception, or other unfair playing practices or abuses, threatens or harasses any other participants, Competition Host or Kaggle.\n\nA disqualified participant may be removed from the Competition leaderboard, at Kaggle's sole discretion. If a Participant is removed from the Competition Leaderboard, additional winning features associated with the Kaggle competition platform, for example Kaggle points or medals, may also not be awarded.\n\nThe final leaderboard list will be publicly displayed at Kaggle.com. Determinations of Competition Host are final and binding.\n\n11. WINNERS OBLIGATIONS.\nAs a condition to being awarded a Prize, a Prize winner must fulfill the following obligations:\n\n(a) deliver to the Competition Host the final model's software code as used to generate the winning Submission and associated documentation. The delivered software code should follow these documentation guidelines, must be capable of generating the winning Submission, and contain a description of resources required to build and/or run the executable code successfully; For generally commercially available software that you used to generate your submission that is not owned by you, but that can be procured by the Competition Host without undue expense, you do not need to grant the license in the preceding sentence for that software\n\n(b) grant to the Competition Host the license to the winning Submission stated in the Competition Specific Rules above and represent that you have the unrestricted right to grant that license.\n\n(c) sign and return all Prize acceptance documents as may be required by Competition Host or Kaggle, including without limitation: (i) eligibility certifications; (ii) licenses, releases and other agreements required under the Rules.\n\n12. PRIZES. \nPrize(s) are as described on the Competition Website and are only available for winning during the time period described on the Competition Website. (See also citations section below)**\n\nUrban areas face the growing challenge of noise and heat, which affect our comfort, health, and productivity. Effective management of these factors is crucial as they influence the productivity, satisfaction, and stress levels of people in indoor and outdoor environments.\n\nKnowing and predicting locations with comfortable thermal and acoustic conditions empowers people to find refuge from heat and noise. This knowledge could provide relief from the negative impacts, making the city appear cooler and quieter while still accounting for personal comfort preferences. \n\nHence, this competition's goal is to use contextual data to predict noise distraction and thermal preference across a diversity of indoor and outdoor spaces.\n\nThis competition includes the city-scale collection of 9,808 smartwatch-driven micro-survey responses that were collected alongside 2,659,764 physiological and environmental measurements from 98 people using the open-source Cozie-Apple platform ([website](https://cozie-apple.app/), [paper](https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.13977)) combined with geolocation-driven urban digital twin metrics from the [Urbanity Python package](https://urbanity.readthedocs.io/en/latest/index.html).
