# Dataset Description

This dataset contains site-level information for coral reef locations, including environmental and spatial variables as well as coral species presence. Each row represents a single reef site, described by a set of ecological conditions and habitat features. The target variables are binary indicators of whether specific coral species are present at each site.

The data for this competition is synthetic, and generated as a variation on the [Coral Reef Sites](https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/petermoorhouse/coral-reef-sites/data) dataset.


## Files

*   **train.csv** - the training set
*   **test.csv** - the test set
*   **sample_submission.csv** - a sample submission file in the correct format

## Columns

- `id` – An identifier for the reef site  
- `region` – The named region at which the site is located  
- `depth` – The depth (in metres) at which the reef site is located  
- `substrate_type` – The dominant substrate type at the site  
- `structural_complexity` – A measure of physical terrain complexity at the site  
- `water_temperature` – Sea surface temperature at the site in degrees Celsius (°C)  
- `salinity` – Water salinity in parts per thousand (ppt)  
- `light_availability` – Categorical descriptor of light availability at the site  
- `coral_cover` – Estimated percentage of the reef surface covered by live coral  
- `algal_cover` – Estimated percentage of the reef surface covered by algae  
- `marine_protection_status` – Whether the reef is within a Marine Protected Area (MPA)  
- `proximity_to_human_activity` – Distance to nearest human population or activity in kilometres  
- `species_[Name]` – Binary indicator (1 = present, 0 = absent) for the presence of a given coral species
