"content": "<p>Thank you for organizing this interesting competition. I would like to share some feedback and suggestions regarding the prize pool distribution. Currently, the prizes are listed as:</p>\n<pre><code>1st Place – $50,000 \n2nd Place – $20,000 \n3rd Place – $5,000 \nTotal: $75,000\n</code></pre>\n<p>Based on the current leaderboard and related discussions, it appears that significant rank fluctuations are likely. In such a scenario, the current prize distribution may feel unfair to participants finishing in <code>4th</code> or <code>5th</code> place, especially if their scores are very close to those of the top three. It is also possible that the performance difference between the 1st- and 2nd-place models may not be substantial enough to justify such a large gap in rewards.</p>\n<p>I understand that this structure follows common Kaggle practices; however, given the competitive nature and tight score margins in this competition, it may warrant reconsideration. I would like to propose the following alternatives:</p>\n<p><strong>Suggestion 1:</strong> Distribute the total prize pool among the top <code>5</code> or top <code>10</code> leaderboard positions. This approach would be both fairer and more aligned with the competitive dynamics of the leaderboard, while remaining Kaggle-friendly. For example:</p>\n<pre><code>1st Place – $20,000 \n2nd Place – $15,000 \n3rd Place – $10,000 \n4th Place - ..\n</code></pre>\n<p><strong>Suggestion 2:</strong> After the competition concludes, use the final leaderboard scores of the top <code>5</code> or top <code>10</code> teams to guide a more nuanced prize distribution. For example, if the top scores are very close (e.g., 70%, 65%, and 64%), the rewards for adjacent ranks, such as 2nd and 3rd place should not differ significantly.</p>\n<p>I believe either approach would better reflect the actual performance differences and encourage broader participation.</p>",

They don't represent issues with lighting uniformity, that might occur with photos at different times of the day or weather conditions.</p>\n<p>I disagree with what seems to be a common thought with many AI experiments I see on Kaggle or elsewhere. The thought seems to be that we can collect sloppy data and let the data scientist fix it; with an assumption that it leads to better generalization and accounts for end-users being poor data collectors. I would always suggest a design that collects accurate data and than let the data scientist do transforms that lead to generalization and to account for user skills. The balance for this would move based on the planned sample size. IMO with 357 photographs on 19 locations, 3 years of data collection, several camera types and 4 seasons of the year, your design for photos should have been similar to that apparently used for NDVI data - seems like 100 measurements taken per plot was the process. "rawMarkdown": "Just as a note of disagreement with your experimental design decision. The shadows are persons, tripods for the camera or edges of the test frame. They don't represent issues with lighting uniformity, that might occur with photos at different times of the day or weather conditions.\n\nI disagree with what seems to be a common thought with many AI experiments I see on Kaggle or elsewhere. That is, more efforts to keep camera and person shadows out of the frame.\n\nIf I am wrong in this belief than a high scoring (0.90 or better) model will emerge in three months.

"content": "<p>I think the current dataset is excellent for one specific task:\ngiven an image + NDVI + height + date + species, predict the biomass at that moment.\nThat’s a well-defined ML problem, and many models will perform strongly on it.</p>\n<p>However, real grazing and pasture management are dynamic and path-dependent systems. Two paddocks with the same present biomass can behave very differently depending on their recent grazing pressure. Rainfall history, stress cycles, soil type, paddock identity, and past management all influence recovery and biomass regrowth has real hysteresis. Overgrazed paddocks do not recover like rested ones.</p>\n<p>None of this structure is represented in the dataset. There are no paddock IDs, no longitudinal sequences, no stocking density or grazing events, no soil properties, and no management history ,only static snapshots treated as independent samples. As a result, NDVI + height + seasonal timing already capture most of the explainable signal, and image texture provides some marginal improvement, but true pasture recovery dynamics are nearly impossible to learn from this format.</p>\n<p>For a future version, it would be incredibly valuable to include repeated measurements from the same paddock over time, explicit grazing/rest intervals, rainfall summaries, soil type, and stocking history. That would allow models to answer the questions farmers genuinely care about, not just “How much biomass is here today?” but “How will this paddock respond if I graze it now versus five days later?”</p>\n<p>Thanks to the organizers !!</p>",

Computer vision–based biomass estimation is an important step toward that vision—it enables large-scale, low-cost, and pottentially accurate biomass measurement. Only with such capability can we begin to meaningfully connect biomass with other factors and make robust management decisions.</p>\n<p>Thank you for your thoughtful comment. Your suggestions are highly valuable, and we will certainly consider them in our future work.</p>",

"3308275": "We are thrilled to host this challenge because we believe the brightest data minds from around the globe can help solve one of the most persistent and meaningful problems in modern agriculture.\n\nIf you have any questions about the data, evaluation criteria, or any other aspect of the competition, please feel free to post them in the Discussion forum. We welcome all questions and discussions, and I will do my best to answer them promptly.\n\nThank you for joining us, and we wish you the very best of luck!",
"3381378": "Thank you for organizing this interesting competition. I would like to share some feedback and suggestions regarding the prize pool distribution. Currently, the prizes are listed as:\n\n```\n1st Place – $50,000 \n2nd Place – $20,000 \n3rd Place – $5,000 \nTotal: $75,000\n```\n\nBased on the current leaderboard and related discussions, it appears that significant rank fluctuations are likely. In such a scenario, the current prize distribution may feel unfair to participants finishing in `4th` or `5th` place, especially if their scores are very close to those of the top three. It is also possible that the performance difference between the 1st- and 2nd-place models may not be substantial enough to justify such a large gap in rewards.\n\nI understand that this structure follows common Kaggle practices; however, given the competitive nature and tight score margins in this competition, it may warrant reconsideration. I would like to propose the following alternatives:\n\n**Suggestion 1:** Distribute the total prize pool among the top `5` or top `10` leaderboard positions. This approach would be both fairer and more aligned with the competitive dynamics of the leaderboard, while remaining Kaggle-friendly. For example:\n\n```\n1st Place – $20,000 \n2nd Place – $15,000 \n3rd Place – $10,000 \n4th Place - ..\n```\n\n**Suggestion 2:** After the competition concludes, use the final leaderboard scores of the top `5` or top `10` teams to guide a more nuanced prize distribution. For example, if the top scores are very close (e.g., 70%, 65%, and 64%), the rewards for adjacent ranks, such as 2nd and 3rd place should not differ significantly.\n\nI believe either approach would better reflect the actual performance differences and encourage broader participation.",

Its license is not OSI-approved and not a GPL3 license, but Section 2.5.a mentions exceptions for pretrained models with incompatible licenses. Please clarify if this applies here.\n\nLicense reference: https://github.com/facebookresearch/dinov3/blob/main/LICENSE.md",
"3387310": "Hi @qiyuliaocsiro,\n\nI have a question regarding the use of test data during the inference phase.\n\nSince this is a Code Competition, are we permitted to use unsupervised techniques on the test set during the notebook runtime? Specifically, I am interested in:\n\nTransductive / Continual Learning: Updating model weights or batch normalization statistics dynamically using the test set features (without labels) during the inference run.\n\nPost-processing: adjusting final predictions based on the statistical distribution of the test data batch.\n\nI want to ensure my approach remains within the competition rules regarding data leakage.",
"3364771": "[Qiyu](https://www.kaggle.com/qiyuliaocsiro)\n\nIts not clear to me how the evaluation handled weeds in the study. \n\nFor example, Crumbweed is bad - too much can make animals sick. One would assume that you do not want it listed as Biomass - but...\n\nWere known weeds not included in the grass or clover or dead values?",
"3359489": "I think the current dataset is excellent for one specific task:\ngiven an image + NDVI + height + date + species, predict the biomass at that moment.\nThat’s a well-defined ML problem, and many models will perform strongly on it.\n\nHowever, real grazing and pasture management are dynamic and path-dependent systems. Two paddocks with the same present biomass can behave very differently depending on their recent grazing pressure. Rainfall history, stress cycles, soil type, paddock identity, and past management all influence recovery and biomass regrowth has real hysteresis. Overgrazed paddocks do not recover like rested ones.\n\nNone of this structure is represented in the dataset. There are no paddock IDs, no longitudinal sequences, no stocking density or grazing events, no soil properties, and no management history ,only static snapshots treated as independent samples. As a result, NDVI + height + seasonal timing already capture most of the explainable signal, and image texture provides some marginal improvement, but true pasture recovery dynamics are nearly impossible to learn from this format.\n\nFor a future version, it would be incredibly valuable to include repeated measurements from the same paddock over time, explicit grazing/rest intervals, rainfall summaries, soil type, and stocking history. That would allow models to answer the questions farmers genuinely care about, not just “How much biomass is here today?” but “How will this paddock respond if I graze it now versus five days later?”\n\nThanks to the organizers !!",
"3334673": "In an attempt to understand the data I have tried to model clover and grass growth over the year. My models don't make sense! Do you know if the pastures used in the data collection were used for grazing during 2015?\n\nThat would seem to be the most likely cause for my issues.",
"3313558": "Hi @qiyuliaocsiro ,\nCan we pretrain a model locally on additional datasets that are **publicly available** online?\nWould using these locally **pretrained model weights** for the official submission be allowed, or would it count as using external data against the competition rules?",
