"content": "
First, thank you for providing the updated, cleaner dataset - it’s clear that a lot of effort went into improving data quality, and it will ultimately benefit the challenge.
\n
I do have a couple of concerns I’d like to share:
\n
\n

Mid-competition changes: Updating the data and rules partway through the competition can be challenging for participants who have been working since the start of the Deep Past Challenge. Many of us invested significant time normalizing and adapting to the original data, and these efforts may no longer be applicable. While I understand the intent to improve the dataset, this kind of change can feel discouraging from a fairness standpoint.

\n

Information consistency across platforms: Some important clarifications appear to be shared on Discord but not reflected in the official Kaggle discussion or data description. For participants who rely solely on the Kaggle platform, this creates an uneven playing field. It would be very helpful if all critical information were consolidated in the official documentation.

\n
\n
That said, I’m still enjoying the challenge and plan to continue participating.
\n
To help avoid further rework, especially for normalizing re-OCR data such as Larsen, could you please provide a detailed list of the normalization changes that were applied? A quick diff of train.csv suggests that, beyond replacing with , there were also changes such as quote removal, number fractions, Hh, subscripts, and possibly other text adjustments. Having a clear summary would help participants align their preprocessing steps with the updated data. Could you provide the updated list of characters allowed in transliteration and translation?
\n
Finally:
\n
\n
\"Dataset instructions\" had not been updated and still ask us to use big_gap.
\n
fem. plur. are still here but you recommended to remove them
\n
",

I'm sure Adam is a professional and knows his domain perfectly. Just sometimes people are unfamiliar with how many GPU/human hours could be burnt by solving a problem within a particular setting and that changing this setting could be a bit painful.
\n
Nevertheless, I'm sure that 'transitivity' of a translation quality still holds (in general) for the new test. Let's just hope that it is the last change~~
",

The `train.csv`, `published.csv`, the (hidden) `test.csv`, and the test set labels have all been updated. The competition host will follow up soon with more details.\n\nI will also be initiating a rescore of all current submissions tomorrow. I will keep you updated as this progresses. All new submissions will be scored against the updated labels.\n\nUPDATE 02/20/2026: We are working on another (hopefully final) update that should address some of the issues raised here. I hope to have it out soon, likely Monday. We will delay the rescore until then.",
"3408114": "First, thank you for providing the updated, cleaner dataset - it’s clear that a lot of effort went into improving data quality, and it will ultimately benefit the challenge.\n\nI do have a couple of concerns I’d like to share:\n\n- Mid-competition changes: Updating the data and rules partway through the competition can be challenging for participants who have been working since the start of the Deep Past Challenge. Many of us invested significant time normalizing and adapting to the original data, and these efforts may no longer be applicable. While I understand the intent to improve the dataset, this kind of change can feel discouraging from a fairness standpoint.\n\n- Information consistency across platforms: Some important clarifications appear to be shared on Discord but not reflected in the official Kaggle discussion or data description. For participants who rely solely on the Kaggle platform, this creates an uneven playing field. It would be very helpful if all critical information were consolidated in the official documentation.\n\nThat said, I’m still enjoying the challenge and plan to continue participating.\n\nTo help avoid further rework, especially for normalizing re-OCR data such as Larsen, **could you please provide a detailed list of the normalization changes that were applied**? A quick diff of train.csv suggests that, beyond replacing <big_gap> with <gap>, there were also changes such as quote removal, number fractions, Hh, subscripts, and possibly other text adjustments. Having a clear summary would help participants align their preprocessing steps with the updated data. Could you provide **the updated list of characters allowed in transliteration and translation**?\n\nFinally:\n- \"Dataset instructions\" had not been updated and still ask us to use big_gap.\n- fem. plur. are still here but you recommended to remove them\n\n",

My work on them is basically useless ,it feels like all my time was wasted.\n\nThis cannot keep happening. If the dataset isn’t stable, the competition should start only when it’s ready. Also, are you planning to update the data one day before the competition ends? We need a stable dataset so our work actually counts.",
