## Goal of the Competition

The goal of this competition is to predict the charging and discharging patterns of batteries on the electricity network, and the key drivers of this behaviour.

This exciting challenge will give you the opportunity to learn more about the Electricity System Operator (ESO) of Great Britain, and how we're trying to improve our understanding of battery behaviour on the network to ensure we can balance supply and demand of electricity reliably and economically.

## Context

The ESO sits at the heart of the electricity system in Great Britain. Our job is to move electricity around the country's high voltage network to balance supply and demand in real-time, using a mix of power sources (including batteries), to make sure electricity is available wherever and whenever it's needed.

One of our core ambitions is to facilitate the decarbonisation of Great Britain's energy network and ensure the delivery of reliable, affordable , and green electricity for consumers.

Batteries enable us to store excess energy from intermittent renewable sources such as sun and wind, so that when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing, we can deploy batteries to help us balance the network. Currently, the capacity of batteries in GB is growing steadily, and you will have the opportunity to explore various datasets and understand how batteries support demand on the network, forecast their impact and see how they can be used to make real-time decisions to balance the system.

Improving our forecasts of electricity demand across the network, and ultimately optimising the use of batteries will help us make better decisions in real-time. Your solutions may help shape the future of GB's energy system to help us facilitate net zero and a fair transition to a decarbonised system for all of GB's consumers.
